Bolt's Friday Favorites

Tis the season… for travel! Whether we are traveling in between our East and West Coast offices, jet setting to take a vacation or flying to visit family for the holidays, our team is constantly on the go. Here are a few travel gadgets we can’t leave home without!

  • iPad – The iPad gives you access to email, games, apps, Internet and movies. It’s perfect for travel to stay connected and entertained!

  • The Nook – As the world’s best reading experience and tablet essential, the Nook is amazing and we can’t live without it!

  • Canon Powershot D10You can’t travel without capturing the memories! This point-and-shoot camera snaps amazing shots and is waterproof! Love it.

  • The Wireless Luggage Finder – This little gadget takes away the pain of looking for your bags when you get off the plane.  The tag transmitter attaches to the handle on your bag and when your luggage arrives in the carousel, your keychain remote will alert you by sending a series of beeps, vibrations and a flashing red light to let you know!

  • iPhone – In general, we can’t live without it, but for travel it’s a MUST. The iPhone lets us listen to music, watch TV shows and movies, access email and check out our favorite blogs too! What’s not to love?

  • Biosilk Hair Gloss –   We know this isn’t a gadget, but it’s just too good not to mention! Biosilk Hair Gloss is the ideal lightweight replenishing treatment to protect and maintain hair and skin in optimum condition. It’s a great product and ideal for travel!

No Shave November, or Movember: The Art of the Moustache

As we’ve said before, we love supporting good causes of all kinds. This month marked the start of a unique awareness campaign that stands behind an important cause. Movember, commonly referred to as ‘No Shave November,’ occurs when men let their facial hair flourish through the month of November to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

Once registered at www.movember.com, men start Movember 1st clean shaven. “Mo Bros,” as they’re called, effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

So, is Movember just a silly campaign or an effective awareness platform? The statistics don’t lie – millions of dollars have been raised for men’s prostate cancer through Movember:

There are only a few more weeks until Thanksgiving and before you know it, Christmas will be upon us! Our team is gearing up for the holiday madness and we have to admit, it makes us a little nostalgic. To kick off the season right, check out a few of our favorite holiday traditions, both new and old:

  • Mom’s English Toffee – Everyone in Dennis’ family knows the holiday season has arrived when the first batch of toffee is made!

  • Johnny Cake – Every year before Thanksgiving, Jesse’s dad would make a pumpkin pie the night before. He would take the extra crust and bake it, then add cinnamon and sugar. Then, they’d eat it after everyone went to sleep. It’s a special tradition and delicious!

  • Nonnie’s Chocolate Fudge – Whenever Ashley’s grandma’s house would fill up with the smell of her famous chocolate fudge, the entire block knew the holidays were in full effect. Nowadays, her mom carries on the tradition!

  • Thanksgiving Attire – Every few years, Jo-Anne’s family decided to wear ridiculous attire while cooking turkey dinner. The girls get aprons and the boys get baseball hats and t-shirts, all with crazy turkeys hot glued on the front. She’s not quite sure how it started, but oddly enough this tradition started well before there were grandchildren!

  • Starting new traditions – Caroline and Brent are kicking off the holiday season with new traditions! First, with running the Dana Point Turkey Trot of course! Secondly, she’s cooking her own Thanksgiving dinner for the first time ever and going all out to include: traditional turkey; cranberry sauce; stuffing; sweet potato casserole with walnuts, raisins and toasted marshmallows (the ONLY way to make/eat sweet potato casserole J); green bean casserole; and butter rolls!

Five Reasons Google+ Could Win the Social Enterprise Battle

Google+ has received quite a bit of buzz since first launching this summer. Among an array of rave reviews and skeptical criticism – the jury is still out whether or not Google+ will hold its own in the social enterprise battle. On the brink of their newest announcement last Thursday, launching accessibility through Google App users, millions of people using Google Apps for businesses will now have access to the social collaboration platform. This new launch has stirred the pot once again in the social media world and causing those critics to reconsider the strength of Google+. Here are five reasons why Google+ could win the social enterprise battle:

  1. Smart Integration Existing Google Apps – Google+ is fully integrated with Google Apps. As a user, you don’t need a new login — it’s just another tab like mail, calendar, docs or video. Most business users spend their day in mail or calendar, so a tool that’s easily accessible from the daily workflow has advantages over third-party software.
  2. Google+ Already Knows  a Lot About You – Because of its tight integration with Google Apps, Google+ could take advantage of what Google already knows about each business user, including whom they email, how often and how recently, as well as the topics they write about and search for.
  3. Google+ is Uniquely Positioned to Help You Find and Share Interesting Content – Nobody has a better index of what’s on the web than Google, so nobody is better positioned to help you find interesting content and people from both inside and outside your company.
  4. Google+ Integrates Public and Private Sharing – Unlike other social enterprise platforms, which keep most shared content behind company walls, Google+ integrates public and private sharing. Also, because a number of websites have already embedded +1 buttons, it’s easy to “like” content from across the web and share it with targeted groups.
  5. Android Phones Sync Easily With the Entire Apps Suite – Finally, an Android mobile phone brings this complete integration to users on the go. Activating Android handsets with your company’s Google Apps account brings all this productive and social functionality to the palm of your employees’ hands.

Going Retro – Style.com Launches Print Magazine

Not a day goes by without a print publication expanding its online presence. But a web-based magazine going to print? Now that’s almost unheard of. Leave it to Style.com to make that bold move, launching the fashion websites first print issue last week.

The new issue, a recap of the spring 2012 runway collections, is an interesting adaptation of the web to print form. Another unique twist – tweets are printed alongside full-page ads from major fashion advertisers, such as Versace and Valentino.

The glossy new pages could help Style.com, operating online since 2000, reach new audiences. In a release statement, Style.com/Print‘s publishers said the first issue would be available at “select newsstands” for $14.99, while also available for online purchase at style.com/magazine for $6.99.

Social Networking On-The-Go

Mobile Social Media Taking Over the World, One App at a Time

Mobile social networking is continuing to grow — as if our team didn’t see that coming.  As mentioned in our Friday Favorites last week, our team uses apps for just about everything. Smart phones continue to evolve in efficiency and allow us to perform practically any function possible, as there is always “an app for that.”

New statistics from comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, recently revealed that 72.2 million Americans accessed social networking sites or blogs on their mobile device during this past August alone. This marks an impressive 37 percent increase over the previous year. The study also provided new insights into how mobile users interact with social media, finding that more than half read multiple posts from an organization, brand or event while on their mobile device.

Increasingly, users are accessing social media sites through various apps. While the audience for mobile browsing of social networks grew 24 percent over the past year, the social networking app audience grew 126 percent to 38.5 million people.

We’ve seen firsthand how the rise of social media has affected our lives and has changed the way we do things – both in work and play.  The stats continue to prove one thing: social media is here to stay.
